Everything you need to know about menopause

Perimenopause

What is the difference between menopause and perimenopause?

The terms perimenopause and menopause are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference.

Menopause is a specific moment: the day a woman has gone exactly 12 months without a period. It is essentially a single point in time, determined in retrospect.

Perimenopause is the broader process, the years before and after menopause during which the body gradually produces less estrogen. This process lasts an average of 4 to 10 years. This is the period when symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep problems, mood swings, and irregular periods occur.

What is menopause?

Menopause marks the natural end of menstrual cycles. It is defined as the point in time when someone has not had a period for 12 months, typically between the ages of 45 and 55.

At what age does menopause start?

The average age for menopause is 51, although it can happen earlier or later. Genetics, health, and lifestyle all play a role.

How long does menopause last?

Menopause symptoms can last for several years, but this varies greatly from person to person. Some people notice changes for less than two years, while others experience symptoms for ten years or longer.

What are the first signs of menopause?

Early signs of menopause, which occur during perimenopause, often include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, and mood or sleep disturbances.

What are the most common symptoms of menopause?

Common symptoms include hot flashes, sleep problems, mood swings, vaginal dryness, weight fluctuations, and decreased bone density. However, everyone's experience and body are unique.

Is weight gain a symptom of menopause?

Weight gain is not caused by menopause alone, but hormonal changes can shift fat storage, especially around the abdomen. Aging, metabolism, and lifestyle also play a role.

Can you get pregnant after menopause?

No. Once menopause has been reached (12 months without a period), a natural pregnancy is no longer possible.

Is treatment safe?

For many people, treatment during perimenopause and menopause is safe, but this depends on age, personal health, and family history. A healthcare provider will help determine if treatment is appropriate for you.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP. When you start treatment, we will provide you with a letter that you can share with your GP so they are also informed about your treatment. If desired, we can also share your information with the LSP (National Exchange Point) so that other healthcare providers are also kept up to date.

How much does the medication cost?

In most cases, the medication is covered by your health insurance, though please keep your deductible in mind.

How do I receive the medication?

We ship the medication for free in discreet packaging. You can choose to have it delivered to your home or pick it up yourself at a PostNL location.
